OaklandAnnounces 2012 Mother of the Year

/59^th Annual Awards Ceremony Honors Lisa Lemus/

**

*Oakland**, CA* -- City of Oakland's Office of Parks and Recreation
(OPR) will honor *Lisa Lemus as the 2012 Mother of the Year, *at its
59^th Annual Mother of the Year Award Ceremony from 10:30am to 12:30pm
on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at the Morcom Rose Garden, located at 700 Jean
Street in Oakland. Ms. Lemus was selected out of a group of highly
qualified nominees consisting of exemplary citizens, all of whom have
made significant contributions to the City of Oakland.

As a lifelong educator, volunteer, counselor/mentor and steward of parks
Ms. Lemus takes inspiration from Cesar Chavez in understanding that to
give back to your community is to give to yourself. Lisa graduated from
Stanford in 1975, obtained a Master's degree from MillsCollegeand a
teaching credential from CSU Hayward. Lisa worked in the area of youth
counseling for over ten years and taught at Manzanita School until
2003. Now happily "retired" into public service Ms. Lemus has become
increasingly active volunteering at Oakland parks, her church and the
Oakland Museum where she has been a docent guide for two years.

Ms. Lemus was nominated by the Sheffield Avenue Neighborhood
Association, with letters of support from the Friends of Sausal Creek
and Lakeside Temple of Practical Christianity. For the past seven years
Lisa and her husband have been co-stewards for William D. Wood Park, a
5-acre park near Fruitvale which is part of the Sausal Creek watershed.
Lisa coordinates volunteers, organizes a monthly clean-up day, and leads
student community service days for local schools. Her teaching
experience makes her particularly adept at working with young people and
helping to build their leadership skills through efforts at the park.
Lisa has been described as, "humble and truly a great leader", traits
that have volunteers returning month after month and year after year.
In addition to making the park safer and more beautiful, community
involvement makes the park a focal point for the neighbors to be
"neighborly".

Oakland's Mother of the Year Award is a project of the Office of Parks
and Recreation and was initiated in 1954 to publicly honor an Oakland
citizen whose contributions to the community symbolize the finest
traditions of motherhood, although being a parent is not a requirement
to be nominated for the Mother of the Year Award. Past honorees have
included hard-working, dedicated community servants whose volunteerism
has been exemplary.
