Oakland’s Wildfire Prevention District (WPD) will take up the issue of protecting local endangered plant species at its monthly meeting on Thursday, July 21, 7:00 p.m. at the Trudeau Center on Skyline Blvd. Please consider attending the meeting to either voice your concern or show support for new protocols that would better protect these species. The Fire Department, which is responsible for vegetation management using WPD funds, has been accused of not doing enough to protect these species, most recently the Presidio clarkia. Endangered plants are often cut along with nonnatives by contractors hired to weed whack parcels of public land.
If you want to comment on this topic, you can fill out a comment card prior to the meeting and be recognized during the public comment portion. The WPD citizens advisory committee will take up the issue formally later in the meeting. For more information on the WPD and its proceedings, go to www.oaklandnet.com/wildfireprevention
