[Fosc] Creek is rushing

Hello all,
Remember the fire hydrant break at the top of the watershed, near the Chabot Space & Science Center, on September 1st, 2013? That was chloraminated water, and a lot of it. I found dead damselfly larvae just after.
But, within a week, we did a survey at the tot lot, and found the bugs that we'd expect in the creek.
The drought has appeared to be much tougher on the bugs than that release, with fewer types of insects and fewer numbers with each year of the drought.
I don't know long-term effects of chloramine. I'll forward this to a friend at Fish& Wildlife, and see what he thinks.

Stan says they didn't show up for 1/2 hour, that's a lot of chloramine down the drain. I haven't a clue how long it took to get it stopped. The shots on the news were incredible, a 16" pipe carries a lot of water! Egads, where is the kayak?

I went by late Saturday, the EBMUD sandbags and the orange mesh covering was still over the only storm drain inlet I saw. I think those mesh coverings have pockets for big chloramine neutralizer tablets, but did not check to see if they were installed.

There were a bunch of trucks flood/fire company clean-up trucks at one of the private properties on Montana St. And a lot of silt here and there on the streets.

Someone from one of the little dead-end streets near Wood Park said that EBMUD was down in the creek later the day of the break, checking under rocks to see if the aquatic insects had been impacted, they said things okay. I'll believe if/when Kathleen confirms it!

Very good question.

Syncing with the HydroCycle,

We're probably known around the Universe as that really noisy blue planet where everybody pees in their water.

Has EBMUD put out the chloramine neutralizer? This could cause death to aquatic organisms downstream, as has been seen in previous leaks.

Hi Friends of Sausal Creek,
Stan Dodson sent Michelle and me this photo at 7:44 a.m. taken at Dimond Ave. and Montana St. showing the results of a water main break:
He called 911, due to the traffic issue, and EBMUD. EBMUD showed up about a half hour after the call. Thank you to Stan for his quick action ... and for directing traffic until the police arrived.
FOSC has a guide of who to contact about creek problems at www.sausalcreek.org > Get in Touch > Report Creek Issues. But given that our website happens to be down as I am writing this (as wix.com is down), best to put these numbers in your cell phone:

    * Report water main or fire hydrant breaks to EBMUD at (866) 403-2683.
    * Report sewer leaks to Oakland Public Works Call Center using SeeClickFix ( http://en.seeclickfix.com/oakland ) or by calling (510) 615-5566.
    * Report dumping in progress immediately to 911.

Friday morning, 8:30 am. Is water being released somewhere upstream? Very loud rushing of water down here in the Fruitvale.
