Right after I had passed under it, an elder oak cracked and fell across the El Centro trail. At 2pm, another rain watcher was heading back due to the flooded trail and was about 25 meters away when it fell, heavy with rain water during the fiercest part of the shower. It fell and snapped a sapling redwood that was growing on the bank, a tree about 12 years old. Branches also hit a big willow on the other side of the creek and filled the creek, helping back up water, which was raging. So yes if a tree falls in the forest, it does make a noise and well as a lot of other ecological changes.
Here are some documentation shots of the event. http://rauzon.zenfolio.com/p848904370/h268deff8#h3509d884

Happy Solstice!
