Your intollereance for an opinion which is different from yours along with your misconceptions of taxonomy and evolution as expressed intemperantly  in your email has revealed a great deal of your consciousness.  So much for this issue.  Let's let it go.

Gabriel, why do you feel the need to impose an anthropocentric ranking on this circumstance? Yes, We human beings have ascended to the apex of a blip in the cosmic narrative where we shine forth as a glaring embarrassment to the very notion of consciousness itself— so before you go ordering the value of life forms into a tidy taxonomy please consider the simple truth that human consciousness does not confer meaning on the universe. For thousands of generations indigenous peoples all over this glorious planet that is our only home lived in an inseparable kinship with swimmers, flyers, and crawlers who were all part of a magic reality much greater and inscrutable than the mechanistic materialism upon which the narrow set of perceptions you are interjecting here are based. . . Why don’t you strip naked, go plunge in the creek and ask one of these steelhead what the meaning of life is- you might get some coherence, clarity, and connection.
We are lost unto our very selves because we have disavowed our totemic connections to the intricate tapestry of life. Seems like you’ve had your mind co-opted by political correctness to an extreme degree. I don’t think that anyone here is intent upon sloughing off the collateral horrors of the Transadministrational Corprotocracy and the unbridaled fetishistec consumer lifestyle that underpins all of our toxic techno-industrial culture. So that’s all another dialogue.
We are all swimming to the other side
 Be well
Andrew

Hello FOSC;
I see this primarily as an awareness/ education issue.
Most likely, the young men who caught the trout were not homeless and reduced to fishing from Sausal Creek to  feed themselves.
More likely, they were simply ignorant- of the law, and of the value and uniqueness of these fish in our creek.
It seems to me that our FOSC outreach efforts- in particular to those who may have come here from other places-  is one of the most important functions of our organization.
I believe that when people are taught even a basic sense of environmental awareness and stewardship, they will tend to behave more appropriately in natural settings.

Far more heartbreaking is the presence of marginalized human beings who are forced by conditions in a society that cares more about the ecological niche of a species of fish, which in evolutionary terms ranks lower than a snake, than that of fellow human beings living homeless, in the cold, eating from polluted waters. While the trout  struggles to find It's home in Sausal creek, Homosapiens are on the brink of extinction not only for a disregard of other species of life but for a disregard of his own.  While you mentioned a sadness for many reasons, your focal point, your Gestalt, was the fish. Gabriel

One of the youtube comments is from A Hernandez and congratulates "brodie," so that's a start. Save a copy of the video in case the user takes it down (which he may decide to do, after seeing Kimra's comment). The account also has several other video uploads, so there are more chances to figure out who this is.

That's an expensive fish if CDFW catches the angler.
We feel your pain; Codornices Ck.sees a persistent poaching pressure as well.  A colleague witnessed a steelhead being pan fried over an open fire in a creekside encampment down by the railroad culverts.  Very sad for so many reasons.
